The Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Otolaryngology (ANZSPO) recognizes the significant disparities in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in Australia and New Zealand. We acknowledge the unique challenges faced by Indigenous communities and the historical and ongoing impacts of colonisation, social determinants of health, and systemic inequalities

Our Commitment

1. Cultural Respect and Competency: We are committed to providing culturally sensitive care that respects the diverse cultural beliefs, practices, and needs of Indigenous children and their families. This includes ongoing education and training for healthcare professionals to enhance cultural competency.

2. Collaboration with Indigenous Communities: ANZSPO is dedicated to working in partnership with Indigenous communities, leaders, and healthcare providers to develop and implement strategies that address the specific health needs of Indigenous children. We believe that collaborative approaches are essential for meaningful and sustainable improvements in health outcomes.

3. Access to Quality Healthcare: We advocate for equitable access to high-quality otolaryngology care for all Indigenous children. This includes reducing barriers to healthcare services, improving the availability of specialized care in remote and underserved areas, and ensuring that care is delivered in a manner that is respectful and inclusive.

4. Research and Data Collection: ANZSPO supports and encourages research that focuses on Indigenous health, particularly in the area of paediatric otolaryngology. We commit to collecting and utilizing data to better understand health disparities, inform clinical practice, and guide policy development aimed at improving health outcomes for Indigenous children.

5. Advocacy and Policy Development: We will actively advocate for policies and initiatives that address the social determinants of health and promote health equality. ANZSPO is dedicated to contributing to the broader societal efforts aimed at reducing health inequities and ensuring that Indigenous children have the opportunity to achieve the best possible health outcomes.

ANZSPO is committed to improving the health and well-being of Indigenous children through culturally respectful care, collaboration with communities, equitable access to healthcare, research, and advocacy. We strive to be a part of the solution in closing the health gap and ensuring a future where all children, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities for healthy lives.
